Cancer Institute of Florida is working hard to stay at the forefront of cancer treatment and technology, including the use of new targeted therapies for fighting cancer.

An example of a new targeted therapy treatment for prostate cancer is PROVENGE. PROVENGE (pronounced PROH-venge) is a breakthrough treatment option for asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic castrate resistant (hormone refractory) advanced prostate cancer.

This innovative treatment option for certain men with advanced prostate cancer is quite unique in that it uses the body’s own immune system to fight the disease. Researchers discovered that the ability to fight advanced prostate cancer is already in men.

PROVENGE is the only FDA-approved autologous immunotherapy for patients with prostate cancer. This treatment is designed to make the immune system of a patient with prostate cancer, aware of the cancer cells in his body and thus stimulate his system to fight back.

Who can be considered for Provenge Treatment?

Without Symptoms:

For men being considered for treatment with PROVENGE, this means having no prostate cancer-related pain and not needing narcotic pain medication to lessen cancer-related pain.

Minimally Symptomatic:

Having minor symptoms. For men being considered for treatment with PROVENGE, this means having relatively little prostate cancer-related pain and not needing narcotic pain medication to treat cancer-related pain.

Who cannot be considered for Provenge Treatment?

Provenge is not indicated for patients that have visceral (organs such as lungs or liver) metastasis.

PROVENGE is designed to work differently from hormone therapy or chemotherapy.

By stimulating the natural ability of your body’s immune cells to target and attack advanced prostate cancer, PROVENGE may help you live longer.
